Feeling a bit of nervous anticipation in the air!

Feeling a bit of nervous anticipation in the air! I'm heading to Sarajevo tomorrow for 6 nights, along with another 6 international artists. We’re meeting up with 10 artists from Bosnia & Herzegovina to take part in an Arts through SDGs initiative with @zeeartsgallery. I feel soooo excited to be creating and exhibiting in a new country with 16 other artists, but at times I feel bloody terrified too!

We've just 2 days to create a 100x100cm artwork which will be exhibited at the prestigious City Hall in Sarajevo in an exhibition from 23-27 June! Each of us has selected one of the 17 UN sustainable goals to influence and inspire our paintings.

The long awaited opening of Tashkeel's annual summ

The long awaited opening of Tashkeel's annual summer exhibition was last night! Despite there being just over 100 artists, designers and creators' work on display, there was a feeling of cohesion, a story waiting to be told. I could see how the exhibition had been carefully curated so paintings hung next to others that complemented them.

And it was so crowded! At first my heart was in my mouth. I couldn't see my painting. I thought what if it didn't arrive, or what if it did arrive and they didn't like it? And then I spotted it, and it looked fabulous!

The exhibition runs until 27 August, in the Tashkeel Gallery, Unit 26 Al Serkal Avenue. Eligibility for entering this show was a connection with Tashkeel over the past 15 years. A huge pot to choose from, so I feel privileged and grateful to have been selected. It truly is a celebration of the Tashkeel creative community.

I just loved visiting seaside dunes as a kid. So much fun galloping up and down them, then dashing excitedly into the sea.

Well the dunes here in the desert are bigger - so no sea. But the fun of charging up and down them remains the same!

I love to photograph my work outside if I can, to share my inspiration. It makes me feel like the work is complete when I see it in an environment that suits it - where it looks at home.

Last weekend I took some of my small Deserted Village paintings on an outing to some of Al Ain’s sand dunes. We got pretty near the top of one of the high ones - mainly because we've recently had rain so the sand is still quite firm!

It was such fun to place the paintings in the sand and photograph them in these wonderful surroundings. There are lots of other things about living in Al Ain that fill me with wonder. I'll be sharing more very soon!

Hello from Al Mubazzara Historical Dam! Clambering up the rocks is a bit of a challenge, but once on top there's a beautiful walk across the dam, nestled in the mountain.

Because the country is so arid, greenery doesn't take hold on the mountainsides and the rocks are exposed in their rugged glory.

During this visit with my family our hearts were full of love for these beautiful rocks. And then they reciprocated, sending their love back to us! My daughter spotted a tiny little heart shaped rock amongst the hundreds beneath her feet. A few minutes later, my granddaughter unearthed another and then just as we were preparing to leave, I spied one too! Such a beautiful memory for the 3 of us 🤍🤍🤍

The discovery of the hearts coincided with the monthly theme of the heart chakra in the Kaleidoscope membership group I'm a part of. It's a community of soul-aligned coaches and creatives who are running their own businesses. Through monthly energy readings and content co-creation sessions we strive to give our messaging more clarity.

One of the most special elements of this group is the fact that we're all so aligned. Beyond our group calls, we work one-on-one with fellow members, getting to know, support and appreciate each other better.

There are so many amazing women in the community. I'm so grateful our paths crossed. There's such a sense of strength when a group of soul-aligned women are working towards the same goals.

Being a solopreneur can be exhausting and lonely at times. Since I joined this community I've experienced a shift in my approach and am showing myself more love and kindness. Thank you @lauren_woodgate_ and all the other wonderful, members of this group! 🤍🤍🤍

With a sense of trepidation, I opened the door to the fort and looked to see if anyone was inside. There wasn't, so I collected my bags and books from the car and took them inside.

I was at a beautiful little fort on the outskirts of Al Ain city, at the edge of the dunes. I'd had a feeling that my arty bags and books would suit the surroundings so jumped in the car for an impromptu photoshoot!

I find in the emptiness of places like this, there is always the potential for something beautiful to emerge. I'm mesmerized by the light dancing across the walls, the textures and patterns, and the whispers of the past.

I really love these photos. The surroundings showcase the bags and books perfectly. The deserted villages look like they've arrived home. 🤍🤍🤍

They've recently become available in a couple of amazing locations in Sharjah. Gshar shop in the cultural souq and The House of Wisdom library.

Out of the blue I was transported forwards to a very old age, or at least that's how it felt. Breaking my dominant wrist last year was traumatic. I was preparing for an open studio and suddenly I was unable to paint. I thought, what about using my left hand? My inner critic had a field day. You won't be able to. Why do you think you can paint with your left hand? You never use it.

I ignored my inner critic, went into the studio and started work. Oh my! I felt free. I felt liberated. I chose bold, bright colours, probably the antithesis of how I was feeling inside. I painted with expansive, bold strokes. I made marks with sticks and scraped back the paint. I drew and scribbled with wild abandon. My left hand didn't care what anyone else thought, especially my judgmental inner critic. The work was different.

I returned the following day and started another. I mean why not? I was in the flow! At first, I felt reluctant to show anyone what I'd been working on. It didn't feel like my work. It felt raw, a bit like I was feeling inside. These paintings were a reflection of everything I'd been going through.

So was it worth breaking my wrist? Well I wouldn't recommend it! But in a strange way, it was a bit like climbing my own personal Everest. The paintings were just the start of me breaking free from my own limitations.

My focus was the sea. The sea in my dreams and memories. I started with brushes and palette knives as I applied the first coats. But then as the painting progressed I found myself adding paint and glazing medium directly onto the canvas, spraying with a little water and using old paint rags and cloths to move it around the canvas. My hands joined in and there was something very satisfying about working in such a tactile way. The feel of the canvas beneath my fingers, the layers of paint and the essence of joy that filled my heart. It was liberating.

The more fluid movements in The Sea of Light, are a result of allowing my intuition to guide me, doing what's required at the time. I trust in the foundation of techniques and processes I have learned and built over the years, the visual elements I'm drawn to that have become an inherent part of my being. Yet, allowing myself to work in this way takes me out of my comfort zone and pushes me to embrace the unknown and explore what treasures are lying there waiting to be discovered 🤍🤍🤍
